How to check and configure my sound devices (MacOS)

Access the sound settings page

You can use the shortcut (Cmd + Space) to bring up the macOS application search bar. By then typing "sound" in the search bar, you can access the sound settings page:

Here you can check which devices your Mac uses for sound "output" (what you hear) and sound "input" (your microphone).

Output page

On this sound output page, you can:

  • view all sound output devices (headphones, speakers, speakers, etc.) recognized by your Mac,
  • select the one that will be used by default by clicking on it so that it is selected in blue,
  • adjust the volume of the sound using the lowest bar,
  • mute your Mac by checking the "Silence" box.

Note: if you're using a side app, don't expect an immediate change. It is often necessary to refresh or relaunch the application for this change to take effect.

"Entrance" page

On the page that administers sound inputs, you can:

  • view the microphones that are recognized by your Mac,
  • select the one that will be used by default by clicking on it so that it is selected in blue,
  • test your input level, the bars lined up next to "Input Level" should color according to what is being heard.

Sound Effects Pages

On this page you can test your sound output. Here's the procedure to follow :

  • set the alert volume to its maximum,
  • then click on different alert sounds offered in the list above. (Warning, this will select your default alert sound, be sure to click on the one you had when you arrived so as not to change your configuration),

You should hear these different sounds.

Other ways to access sound settings

Menu bar

On each of the previous pages, there is a checkbox at the bottom "Show volume in menu bar". This brings up an icon next to your clock.

By clicking on it, you can:

  • adjust the volume of your sound,
  • select your default output device,
  • access the sound settings page.

System Preferences

You can find on your Dock, the "System Preferences" tool in the form of a gear.
